In an effort to improve their performance, ETU has hired a new coach, the slightly eccentric Tatsumi Takeshi. Tatsumi, who was considered a great football player when he was younger, abandoned the team years before but has proven himself as the manager of one of England's lower division amateur teams. Where it came from
Giant Killing was adapted into a 26-episode television series by Studio DEEN in 2010, based on the long-running manga series written by Masaya Tsunamoto and illustrated by Tsujitomo. The series centers on the fictional East Tokyo United, a struggling professional football club that hires an eccentric, unconventional manager named Tatsumi to turn their fortunes around. The production aimed to subvert traditional sports anime tropes by focusing heavily on the tactical, psychological, and management aspects of professional football rather than just the athletic feats of the players.
The anime is noted for its grounded, character-driven narrative which captures the behind-the-scenes mechanics of a sports team, including the dynamics between management, players, and local fans. Tsujitomo’s distinct character designs and the series' realistic depiction of football strategy were praised for differentiating the show within the saturated sports genre. While it maintains a dedicated cult following for its authenticity and mature approach to sports drama, the series is recognized for its clear-eyed exploration of the business and human complexities inherent in Japanese professional soccer.
