Glassy Ocean

Glassy Ocean was released in 1998 as an experimental animated short, produced by Bandai Visual and directed by the acclaimed animator Hisashi Eguchi. The project emerged from a desire to push the boundaries of cel animation, drawing significant inspiration from the surreal, melancholic atmosphere of Mitsumasa Anno’s picture books. Its visual style is characterized by a dreamlike, watercolor aesthetic that departs from the standard tropes of mainstream Japanese animation during that era.

The film follows the journey of a young boy who encounters a floating, phantom ocean in the sky, serving as a meditative exploration of childhood curiosity and the transition into adulthood. Upon its release, it was lauded by critics and enthusiasts for its technical artistry and ethereal storytelling. It is frequently cited as a hallmark of late 1990s experimental OVA production, noted for its lack of dialogue and reliance on visual narrative to evoke a sense of quiet wonder.
