Where it came from
Glass no Kamen Desu ga Z is a parody spin-off of the long-running Glass Mask (Glass no Kamen) shōjo manga series by Suzue Miuchi. Produced in 2013 by Pony Canyon and directed by Sparrow Ryū, this project reimagines the dramatic lives of Maya Kitajima and Ayumi Himekawa as a comedic, chibi-styled shorts series. The adaptation was designed to satirize the intense, melodramatic tropes of the original source material, which is famous for its slow-paced narrative and high-stakes theatrical rivalry.
The animation style deliberately contrasts with the serious, elegant art typically associated with the main series, leaning into a self-aware, irreverent humor that was well-received by fans looking for a lighter take on the classic story. The OVA served as an extension of the broader 2013 television series, distilling the core tension of the franchise into bite-sized, absurd scenarios that mock the relentless ambition of its iconic characters.
