Where it came from
Gleipnir was produced by studio PINE JAM and released as a television anime series in 2020. Adapted from the manga series by Sun Takeda, the show centers on a high school student named Shuichi Kagaya who possesses the ability to transform into a grotesque, powerful monster mascot. The narrative explores dark, psychological themes as Shuichi is drawn into a high-stakes search for supernatural coins that grant extraordinary powers, blending elements of the supernatural thriller with complex character study.
The animation design sought to balance the visceral, disturbing nature of Shuichi's beast form with the more grounded, melancholic tone of the story's setting. Director Kazuhiro Yoneda worked to maintain the gritty aesthetic of Takeda's original manga illustrations, utilizing distinct color palettes to differentiate between the everyday life of the protagonists and the harsh, violent reality of their secret battles. Upon release, the series garnered attention for its unconventional premise and the tension between its bizarre visual style and its deeper, often cynical exploration of human desire.
