Where it came from
God Mars: Untold Legend, released in 1988, serves as an original video animation sequel to the classic 1981 super robot series Six God Combination Godmars. Produced to satisfy the enduring nostalgia for the original mecha epic, the OVA picks up after the events of the television series, focusing on the protagonist Takeru Myojin and his complex cosmic heritage. It was created during an era when Japanese animation studios frequently revisited successful robot franchises to produce standalone OVAs for the burgeoning home video market.
The animation style and character designs maintain the distinct aesthetic of the early 1980s, reflecting the artistic sensibilities of the original staff. Upon its release, the project was viewed as a nostalgic bridge for dedicated followers of the franchise who had followed Takeru’s journey from the original television run. Discotek Media eventually brought this title to a modern audience, ensuring its preservation as a piece of history within the super robot subgenre.
