Gozonji! Gekkou Kamen-kun

Gozonji! Gekkou Kamen-kun was produced in 1999 by Kyokuichi Tokyo Movie as a comedic, modernized reimagining of the iconic 1958 tokusatsu hero Gekkou Kamen. The series aimed to introduce the classic masked vigilante to a younger generation by shifting the tone from the gritty, live-action suspense of the original serials to a lighthearted, gag-focused animation style. This revival reflected the late 90s trend of revitalizing Showa-era pop culture icons through accessible, episodic television formats.

The character design underwent a significant transformation for this iteration, leaning into stylized, cartoony aesthetics that distanced the protagonist from his original mysterious and stoic persona. By emphasizing slapstick humor and a playful narrative structure, the production sought to capitalize on the nostalgia of older viewers while establishing a new, softer visual identity for the character. While the series succeeded in bringing the character back to the screen, it was received primarily as a niche curiosity compared to the cultural weight of the 1958 original.
