Where it came from
Granbelm was produced by Studio Nexus and aired in 2019 as an original anime series. It emerged during a period of experimentation within the magical girl and mecha genres, aiming to blend traditional whimsical tropes with darker, high-stakes battle dynamics. The series explores themes of identity and legacy through the lens of a mysterious tournament where participants pilot giant mechanical suits known as Armanox.
The character designs, handled by Shinichirou Otsuka, were conceived to offer a distinct visual contrast between the protagonists' school lives and the stylized, futuristic aesthetic of the combat sequences. Upon release, the show was noted by critics for its ambitious narrative structure and fluid action choreography, though it remained a niche entry within the competitive landscape of the late 2010s anime market.
