Granblue Fantasy: The Animation

Granblue Fantasy: The Animation was produced by A-1 Pictures and released in 2017 as a direct adaptation of the immensely popular mobile role-playing game developed by Cygames. The project was conceived to translate the high-fantasy aesthetic of the game—noted for its detailed character designs and lush, painterly backgrounds—into a linear television narrative. By focusing on the initial chapters of the game's journey, the series aimed to introduce newcomers to the expansive world of the Sky Realm and the bond between the protagonist Gran and the mysterious girl Lyria.

The animation direction was handled by A-1 Pictures with a focus on replicating the signature visual style established by the game’s original artists, including Hideo Minaba. The production sought to capture the sense of adventure inherent in the source material's airship-faring setting, utilizing a mix of traditional and digital techniques to maintain the vibrant color palette fans expected. While the adaptation was received as a faithful expansion of the game’s lore, its reception among broader audiences highlighted the challenges of translating non-linear, mission-based game mechanics into a compelling episodic television format.
