Where it came from
Gradations emerged from the Geidai Animation program at Tokyo University of the Arts, a prestigious institution known for fostering experimental short-form storytelling. As an independent student production, the film reflects the rigorous technical training and creative autonomy encouraged within the university's animation department, which emphasizes artistic growth and unconventional narrative structures over commercial viability.
The film is defined by its subtle, atmospheric visual language, focusing on the interplay of light, shadow, and shifting textures to convey emotion rather than traditional dialogue. By utilizing traditional drawing techniques refined through the Geidai curriculum, the creators aimed to explore the fluid transition between static states and movement. Upon its release, it was well-received within the international animation festival circuit, where it was praised for its aesthetic restraint and the technical proficiency of its student-led production team.
