Gregory Horror Show

Gregory Horror Show was created by Naomi Iwata and produced by VAP and Milky Cartoon in 1999. The series is notable for its distinct, low-polygon 3D animation style, which was chosen to evoke a sense of unease and surrealism fitting the dark, psychological nature of the narrative. Set in the mysterious Gregory House, the show follows the protagonist’s attempts to escape a hotel populated by bizarre, tormented entities, effectively blending horror tropes with a unique, minimalist visual aesthetic.

The series emerged during a period of experimentation in Japanese digital animation, where creators were pushing the boundaries of early 3D rendering software. Naomi Iwata sought to craft a claustrophobic atmosphere that relied on unsettling character designs and repetitive, loop-like storytelling to build tension. Upon its release, the show gained a dedicated cult following for its unconventional tone and stark artistic direction, eventually leading to several sequels and influencing later experimental animated works.
