The original manga revolves around Kohina, a little girl who ends up summoning by a Kokkuri-san, a lower-ranking ghost in Japanese folklore. The Kokkuri-san she calls ends up being a white-haired handsome, young man. Although he had intended to merely haunt her at first, he becomes worried about her terrible eating habit of cup ramen for every meal, so he decides to haunt her in order to protect her.

Where it came from
Gugure! Kokkuri-san is a 2014 television anime series adapted from the manga by Midori Endō. Produced by TMS Entertainment and directed by Yoshimasa Hiraike, the series centers on Kohina Ichimatsu, a young girl who summons a low-ranking fox spirit, Kokkuri-san, to play a game of spirit possession. The adaptation was conceived as a supernatural comedy, focusing on the domestic and absurdist interactions between the lonely protagonist and the spectral entities who decide to look after her, blending traditional Japanese folklore with contemporary humor.
The character designs and animation direction sought to balance the aesthetic of a classic 'iyashikei' or healing-style story with the chaotic energy of a gag comedy. The series was noted for its polished production values, consistent with TMS Entertainment's long-standing reputation in the industry. Upon its release, it was well-received by audiences for its balance of slapstick humor and surprisingly poignant themes regarding loneliness and the nature of family, securing a dedicated, though niche, following among fans of the supernatural-slice-of-life genre.
