Where it came from
The Gugure! Kokkuri-san Specials were released in 2015 as a companion to the 2014 anime adaptation of Midori Endō’s popular manga series. Produced by TMS Entertainment, these short vignettes were included with the home video releases to extend the comedic narrative surrounding Kohina Ichimatsu, a young girl who summons a low-ranking fox spirit, and the eccentric supernatural housemates who subsequently invade her life.
The production sought to maintain the high-energy, slapstick, and occasionally surreal aesthetic established by director Yoshimasa Hiraike. TMS Entertainment utilized the specials to lean further into the meta-humor and character-driven gags that defined the main series, offering fans additional glimpses into the domestic dynamic between the fox spirit Kokkuri-san and the girl who acts as his reluctant companion. They were well-received by the existing fanbase for preserving the unique visual style and comedic timing of the primary adaptation.
