Where it came from
Gui Chui Deng: Nan Hai Gui Xu was released as an ONA series by Tencent Penguin Pictures, continuing the sprawling multimedia adaptation of Zhang Muye’s popular 'Ghost Blows Out the Light' novel series. The production aimed to translate the specific tomb-raiding and supernatural horror aesthetic of the fourth book, which follows Hu Bayi, Shirley Yang, and Fatty Wang as they navigate the treacherous South China Sea in search of the mythical Miroir Kingdom.
The animation reflects the studio's broader commitment to high-fidelity 3D CGI, a hallmark of their contemporary domestic web-series output. By employing detailed environmental modeling to capture the isolation of the open ocean and the intricate design of underwater ruins, the production team sought to satisfy a dedicated fan base accustomed to the gritty, lore-heavy tone established in previous adaptations of the series.
