Where it came from
Haikyu!! Land vs. Air was released in 2020 as a two-part original video animation (OVA) serving as a direct continuation of the anime's third season. Produced by Production I.G, these episodes were designed to adapt the Tokyo Metropolitan Representative Playoffs arc from Haruichi Furudate's original manga. The narrative focuses on the intense qualifying matches between Nekoma High, Fukurōdani Academy, Nohebi Academy, and Itachiyama Institute, providing essential character development for fan-favorite players like Kenma Kozume and Kotaro Bokuto ahead of the national tournament arc.
The production team aimed to maintain the high-energy, kinetic visual style established in the earlier seasons, utilizing dynamic camera work to capture the intricacies of volleyball gameplay. By shifting the perspective away from the main protagonists of Karasuno High, the OVAs were well-received for their ability to deepen the world-building and offer a more nuanced look at the rivalries between other schools. Critics and fans praised the animation quality, noting how it balanced the high-stakes tension of the matches with the lighthearted interpersonal dynamics that define the series.
