The event anime will tell an original story that reveals "a surprising side of a popular player."
Lev Haiba is determined to become Nekoma High's ace volleyball player, but can barely hit the ball. The team's coach orders Kenma Kozume to help out Lev with his practice, much to the former's annoyance. However, as they continue to work together, Kenma realizes that Lev's height might actually be able to help in games if his skills are honed in the right way.

Where it came from
Lev Appears! was produced by Studio I.G as an original video animation (OVA) companion to the first season of the anime adaptation of Haruichi Furudate's manga Haikyu!!. Released in 2014, the episode serves as a character-focused interlude that introduces Lev Haiba, a newcomer to the Nekoma High School volleyball team. Its creation was intended to flesh out the team dynamics and provide deeper context for the rivalry between Karasuno and Nekoma, capturing the playful yet competitive spirit central to the series.
The production maintains the high-energy aesthetic and fluid character animation established by director Susumu Mitsunaka and the series' core creative team. By focusing on Lev's unique physical stature and his initial struggles to integrate into Nekoma's precise, defensive style of play, the OVA was well-received by fans for balancing character development with the series' signature comedic timing. It functions as a bridge that keeps viewers engaged with the team's internal training dynamics outside of the primary tournament arcs.
