Where it came from
The Haikyuu!! Ningyou anime short, released in 2020 as a special OVA, was produced as a whimsical companion piece to the long-running sports manga and anime franchise by Haruichi Furudate. It was created to offer a lighthearted diversion from the high-stakes intensity of the primary series, focusing on the characters reimagined as dolls, or 'ningyou', which reflects the series' tradition of releasing supplemental content to maintain fan engagement between major televised seasons.
The design of these segments draws directly from the established aesthetic of the Karasuno High volleyball team, simplifying the character proportions into a stylized, chibi-inspired look. While the animation style departs from the dynamic, kinetic motion usually associated with the franchise's sports matches, it was well-received by the dedicated fanbase as a charming exploration of the characters' personalities in a low-pressure, decorative context.
