Where it came from
Hajime no Ippo: Champion Road was produced by the acclaimed studio Madhouse and released in 2003 as a television special. It serves as a narrative bridge following the conclusion of the initial seventy-five-episode anime series, chronicling Ippo Makunouchi’s first defense of his Japanese Featherweight Championship title against the challenger Sanada Kazuki.
The special maintains the high-energy, detail-oriented animation style that defined the studio’s adaptation of George Morikawa’s long-running manga. Directed by Satoshi Nishimura, the production aimed to replicate the intense psychological and physical stakes of the source material, balancing the technical intricacies of professional boxing with the grounded character development that has kept the series a staple of the sports genre for decades.
