Where it came from
Hajime no Ippo: The Fighting! New Challenger was released in 2009 as the direct sequel to the 2000 television anime adaptation of George Morikawa's long-running boxing manga. Produced by studio Madhouse, the series continued the narrative of Ippo Makunouchi's ascent through the professional boxing world. The production was aimed at capturing the high-intensity pacing and technical detail of the original manga, transitioning the story into the junior middleweight championship arcs.
The series design maintained the aesthetic established by the original anime, emphasizing dynamic motion and heavy character work. Under the direction of Jun Shishido, the series was well-received by fans for its faithfulness to the source material and its visceral depiction of ring tactics. It remains a hallmark of the sports anime genre, noted for its balance between grounded character development and the theatrical exaggeration common to high-stakes combat media.
