Hajime no Ippo: The Fighting! - Mashiba vs Kimura

Hajime no Ippo: The Fighting! - Mashiba vs Kimura was released in 2003 as a standalone original video animation, serving as a direct continuation of the critically acclaimed 75-episode anime series adapted from George Morikawa’s long-running manga. Produced by Studio Madhouse, the OVA was created to bridge narrative gaps and explore the intense, high-stakes rivalry between secondary characters Ryo Mashiba and Tatsuya Kimura, providing a deeper look at their personal motivations and technical fighting styles outside of the protagonist Ippo Makunouchi’s immediate arc.

The production maintains the high visual standards set by the television series, characterized by Madhouse’s focus on kinetic energy and realistic boxing choreography. Under the direction of Satoshi Nishimura, the animation team aimed to capture the visceral intensity of the lightweight title match, leaning into the darker, more aggressive atmosphere synonymous with Mashiba’s character. The OVA was well-received by fans of the series for its faithful adaptation of the manga’s tension and its commitment to character development for characters who often functioned as supporting cast members.
