Hakata Mentai! Pirikarako-chan

Hakata Mentai! Pirikarako-chan was produced by G-angle and released in 2019 as a short-form television anime series. It serves as a regional promotional vehicle for the city of Fukuoka, highlighting the area's local culture, landmarks, and culinary specialty, mentaiko (spicy cod roe). The production leverages the popularity of anthropomorphic characters to engage younger audiences while serving as a soft-power marketing tool for the prefecture's tourism board.

The character design centers on the titular Pirikarako-chan, a personified piece of mentaiko living in the vibrant surroundings of Fukuoka. The aesthetic follows the conventions of contemporary Japanese short-form animation, utilizing a bright, accessible art style intended to convey the energetic and friendly atmosphere of the Hakata district. As a niche production, the series is viewed primarily as a localized branding initiative rather than a mainstream commercial export, focusing on building civic pride and regional recognition.
