When their village was wiped out five years ago, only Shino Inuzuka, Sosuke Inukawa, and the girl Hamaji, who was raised as if she were their sister, survived. And both men inexplicably have the same peony-shaped birthmark. Genpachi Inukai and Kobungo Inuta were raised hundreds of miles away as foster brothers, but they too share the same birthmark. When they went north as part of the army three years ago, they went to confront demons and came back forever transformed. Now the Imperial Church has come for Shino and Sosuke and they must find eight mystical gems and their owners or face a fate worse than death at the hands of the Church.

Where it came from
Hakkenden: Eight Dogs of the East, produced by Studio Deen and released by Bandai Visual in 2013, is an anime adaptation based on the long-running manga series by Miyuki Abe. The narrative draws thematic inspiration from the classic nineteenth-century epic Nansō Satomi Hakkenden, reimagining the legend of the eight warriors into a contemporary supernatural framework. The series focuses on the bond between the protagonist, Shino Inuzuka, and his companions, centering on themes of destiny and survival.
The character designs were overseen by Hiromi Kato, who aimed to maintain the detailed, aesthetic sensibilities characteristic of Abe’s original manga illustrations. Upon its release, the series was noted for its focus on character-driven storytelling and its distinct visual atmosphere. It found a dedicated audience among fans of the supernatural and fantasy genres, reflecting the broader trend of late-2000s and early-2010s manga-to-anime adaptations that prioritized stylized art direction.
