Where it came from
Hakone-chan, also known as Onsen Yosei Hakone-chan, was produced by Asahi Production and Production Reed as a television anime series in 2015. The series is based on the manga by Daisuke Katō, which was serialized in Comic Meteor. It focuses on the comedic premise of a hot spring deity who manifests as a young girl after being away from her shrine for a long time, tasked with helping the local town regain its former popularity.
The character design and art style were crafted to emphasize the whimsical nature of the source material, blending lighthearted fantasy with the setting of a traditional Japanese hot spring town. Upon its release, the series was positioned as a short-format program, typical of the era's trend toward brief, episodic anime installments designed for streaming and late-night television slots, aiming to capture a niche audience interested in regional tourism themes and character-driven humor.
