Where it came from
Hakubo, or Twilight, was produced by Twilight Studio and released in 2019 as the final installment in director Yutaka Yamamoto's self-funded regional anime trilogy. The project was conceived as a love letter to the Fukushima Prefecture, specifically the city of Iwaki, which served as both the setting and the primary inspiration for the film's atmospheric, melancholic depiction of rural life and post-disaster recovery.
The film's visual design aims for a soft, painterly aesthetic that emphasizes the fleeting quality of twilight, reflecting the protagonists' struggle to find connection amidst the transience of their environment. While the production garnered attention for its unique crowdsourced funding model and the director's public persona, the reception was largely divided, with critics praising the evocative background art and local sincerity while noting the film's narrative pacing and stylistic departures from mainstream animation trends.
