Where it came from
Hakumei and Mikochi originated as a manga series by Takuto Kashiki before being adapted into a television anime in 2018 by Studio Lerche. The series follows two tiny women living in the hollow of a giant tree, exploring themes of cozy domesticity, craftsmanship, and nature. It was produced during a period when 'iyashikei' or healing-genre anime were gaining significant international popularity for their meditative pacing and emphasis on atmospheric world-building.
The animation design by Lerche was widely praised for its meticulous attention to detail, specifically in its depiction of the protagonists' living environment and the lush, intricate forest surroundings. By focusing on the tangible, everyday activities of the characters, the series successfully translated Kashiki’s detailed illustrations into a vibrant, tactile experience that prioritized aesthetic beauty and a gentle, immersive tone over high-stakes narrative conflict.
