Where it came from
Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom: A Memory of Snow Flowers consists of a series of six original video animation episodes released in 2011 by Studio DEEN. The series serves as a prequel to the original anime adaptation, which was itself based on the popular otome visual novel developed by Idea Factory and Design Factory. The production was intended to expand upon the backstory of the Shinsengumi, the historical special police force in late Edo-period Japan, by focusing on their early days in Kyoto before the events of the primary narrative.
The project was designed to capitalize on the success of the Hakuoki franchise by providing deeper character development for its ensemble cast. The artistic direction maintained the signature character designs established by Kazuki Yone, prioritizing the blend of historical drama and supernatural fantasy that defined the series. While intended primarily for the existing fan base, the OVAs were well-regarded for their production values and their ability to bridge the gap between the game’s lore and the anime adaptation.
