Where it came from
Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom – Kyoto Wind and Changing Winds, the 2021 OVA series, serves as an extension of the long-running Hakuoki franchise based on the otome visual novel developed by Idea Factory. Produced by Studio DEEN, this installment continues the narrative thread of Chizuru Yukimura and the Shinsengumi during the turbulent Bakumatsu period. The studio sought to maintain the series' established aesthetic, balancing historical drama with the supernatural elements central to the franchise's identity.
The character designs remain consistent with the original concepts by artist Kazuki Yone, whose distinctive style defined the series' look since its debut in 2008. These OVAs were created to satisfy a dedicated fanbase, revisiting the emotional stakes and character arcs that made the original visual novels and subsequent anime adaptations successful. Reception has been largely focused on the production values and the nostalgic continuation of the Shinsengumi’s tragic but romanticized history.
