Halo Legends

Halo Legends was released in 2009 as an anthology of seven short films based on the Halo video game franchise. Commissioned by 343 Industries and Microsoft, the project sought to expand the lore of the Halo universe by collaborating with prominent Japanese animation studios, including Bones, Production I.G, Toei Animation, and Studio 4°C. The intent was to bridge the gap between Western gaming narratives and the stylistic diversity of Japanese anime, allowing different directors to interpret the Master Chief and the Human-Covenant War through varied visual lenses.

Bones contributed the segment titled 'Prototype,' which focuses on a Spartan-like armor system and the ethical dilemmas of its creator. The studio utilized its signature high-octane action style and character-focused storytelling, which had previously defined their work on series like Fullmetal Alchemist. Upon release, the project received a mixed but generally appreciative reception, with critics often praising the artistic experimentation found in the individual shorts, even as fans debated how well the disparate animation styles integrated with the established tone of the Halo games.
