Hana-Kimi

Hana-Kimi, the seminal shojo manga series by Hisaya Nakajo, was adapted into this 2026 ONA project by Aniplex. The production serves as a modern reimagining of the classic story, which follows Mizuki Ashiya, a young woman who disguises herself as a male student to attend an all-boys boarding school to support her idol, the high jumper Izumi Sano. By adapting the work as an original net animation, the studio aimed to capture the vibrant, comedic, and heartfelt essence of the original material for a contemporary streaming audience.

The character design and visual direction for this 2026 adaptation were crafted to balance the nostalgic aesthetic of the late 1990s source material with modern animation techniques. The production team focused on emphasizing the interpersonal dynamics and the central conceit of the cross-dressing comedy that made the manga a pillar of the genre. Upon its release, the adaptation was positioned as both a tribute to Nakajo’s legacy and a fresh entry point for new viewers, receiving attention for its stylistic fidelity to the original character archetypes.
