Hanaichi Monnme

Hanaichi Monme originates from the Edo period as a traditional Japanese children's group game. The name derives from a counting chant used during the activity, referring to the price of a single chrysanthemum, which reflects the historical practice of bartering or purchasing flowers in small quantities during that era. It functions as a ritualized form of tag or tug-of-war, deeply rooted in the social play culture of pre-modern Japan.

The game is culturally significant for its rhythmic, call-and-response structure, which has preserved it through generations of oral tradition. While there is no single designer or manufacturer, the game's endurance is attributed to its role in community building and childhood development. It remains a staple of Japanese school physical education and cultural festivals, serving as a pedagogical tool for teaching rhythm, cooperation, and group cohesion.
