Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid

Toei Animation produced this feature-length adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy tale in 1975 to capitalize on the studio's growing mastery of animation aesthetics. Directed by Tomoharu Katsumata, the film was designed to align with the visual standards of the era's mid-century animation, prioritizing a lyrical, soft-focus aesthetic that leaned heavily into the melancholic tone of the original Andersen text rather than the sanitized versions that would become common in later decades.

The production is notable for its faithful adherence to the original narrative's darker, more tragic ending, which contrasted sharply with more modern interpretations of the story. Upon its release, it was recognized for its ambitious scope and was intended to be a sophisticated piece of international-facing animation. It remains a significant entry in Toei's historical catalog, representing a bridge between the classic hand-drawn storytelling traditions of Japanese cinema and the broader global appeal of Western folk tales.
