Where it came from
Released in 1993, Hangyodon no Parallel Daisakusen is an original video animation produced by Sanrio as part of their broader multimedia push to expand the popularity of their secondary characters. During the early 1990s, Sanrio utilized the OVA format to provide short, whimsical narratives for characters like Hangyodon, the sensitive and often misunderstood fish-human hybrid, helping to transition him from static stationery and gift merchandise into a more defined narrative presence.
The production leans into the surreal and comedic tone emblematic of Sanrio's animation studio efforts during this era, focusing on themes of time travel and alternate realities. The animation style is characterized by the simplified, bold aesthetic typical of 1990s Sanrio productions, which aimed to maintain character recognizability while offering lighthearted entertainment for younger audiences. The work remains a niche entry in Sanrio’s extensive history, appreciated primarily by collectors of character-focused retro anime.
