Heart Cocktail Colorful: Natsu-hen

Heart Cocktail Colorful: Natsu-hen is a 2023 animated television series produced by NHK Educational, serving as a modern revival of the iconic 1980s Heart Cocktail series. Created by Eizo Watase, the original work is renowned for its signature watercolor aesthetic and jazz-infused atmosphere, capturing the essence of urban romance and city life. This specific installment, titled Natsu-hen or Summer Edition, was designed to introduce a new generation to Watase's unique artistic vision while maintaining the minimalist, evocative storytelling that defined the series decades ago.

The visual direction for this production honors the legacy of the original animation by focusing on pastel palettes and fluid motion, intended to evoke a sense of seasonal nostalgia. By collaborating with contemporary voice talent and musical arrangements, the studio aimed to bridge the gap between retro-city pop aesthetics and modern television standards. Upon its release, the series was received as a respectful homage to the golden age of Japanese city-pop culture, appreciated by both long-time fans of the original broadcasts and new viewers drawn to its serene, stylized portrayal of summer.
