Heart Cocktail

Heart Cocktail was created in the mid-1980s by the illustrator Seizo Watase, originally manifesting as a series of short, atmospheric manga vignettes. Transitioning to the screen in 1986, the anime adaptation was produced by the studio Meruhensha. The series served as a quintessential aesthetic anchor for the Japanese 'bubble era,' capturing a stylized, sophisticated urban lifestyle that felt heavily influenced by American pop art and the sleekness of contemporary fashion advertisements.

Watase’s signature visual style—characterized by sharp, clean lines and a palette of vibrant, saturated colors—was meticulously preserved by the animation team. The series is celebrated less for a traditional narrative and more for its evocative, moody vignettes centered on romance, city living, and the passage of seasons. It was received as a cultural touchstone that blended music, minimalist storytelling, and graphic design, ultimately defining the 'city pop' visual identity that remains highly regarded by collectors of 1980s Japanese graphic media.
