Heart Cocktail Colorful: Haru-hen

Heart Cocktail Colorful: Haru-hen is a 2023 revival project of the iconic 1980s animated series Heart Cocktail, produced by NHK Educational. The original series, created by illustrator Seizo Watase, became a cultural touchstone for its atmospheric, watercolor-style depictions of urban romance and city life in Japan. This modern iteration seeks to translate Watase's signature aesthetic for a new generation, maintaining the reflective, meditative tone that defined the source material while incorporating contemporary animation techniques.

The production maintains the core ethos of Watase’s work, which focuses on the intersection of jazz-infused metropolitan vibes and delicate human sentiment. By returning to the aesthetic of the 1980s original, the series aims to evoke a sense of nostalgic comfort and emotional resonance. Upon its release, it was received as a stylish homage to the 'City Pop' era, earning appreciation for its commitment to the gentle, visual storytelling that originally established the brand as a distinctive pillar of Japanese animation.
