Shinya is the manager of a small coffee house staffed by his twin stepsisters Chiyori and Chika. When a franchise for a large café chain opens across the street, the siblings are forced to improvise to hang onto their business. The girls start wearing revealing costumes to attract more clientele, although when regular customer Aya becomes close to Shinya, it inspires feelings of jealousy in Chika. Chika decides to seduce Shinya herself, although this soon causes problems for her twin, whose feelings towards him remain purely platonic. Erotic high jinks ensue.

Where it came from
Heartful Cafe was released in 2002 by the Milky Animation Label as an original video animation, or OVA, during a period when the studio was exploring intimate, slice-of-life narratives within the Japanese animation market. The project was conceived as a gentle character-driven piece, intended to provide a contrast to the high-intensity action genres that dominated much of the era's animation output. By focusing on the atmosphere of a quiet neighborhood establishment, the creators aimed to cultivate a sense of nostalgia and emotional respite for the viewer.
The visual design and direction for the title were rooted in the aesthetic traditions of early 2000s independent animation, characterized by soft color palettes and character models designed to evoke warmth and approachability. Because the title occupied a niche space within the Milky Animation Label's catalog, it garnered a modest but dedicated reception among enthusiasts of domestic, low-stakes storytelling. Its legacy remains tied to its role as a representative example of the label's commitment to smaller, contemplative works during a transitional time for the OVA format.
