Henkei Sakuhin Dai 3-ban: Mixed Juice

Henkei Sakuhin Dai 3-ban: Mixed Juice is a significant work within the Japanese experimental animation movement of the late 1960s. Created by artist and animator Yoji Kuri, the piece exemplifies the surrealist, often dark, and minimalist aesthetic that defined his studio, Kuri Jikken Manga Kobo. These works were produced during a period of intense artistic exploration in Tokyo, where Kuri and his contemporaries sought to break away from mainstream narrative structures to explore the subconscious through abstract visual language.

The design of the piece is characterized by Kuri’s signature economical line work and subversive humor, intended to challenge audience perceptions of domesticity and order. By utilizing a fluid, shifting visual style, the film functions as an exercise in metamorphosis, reflecting the rapid industrial and social transformations occurring in Japan at the time. It was received as a provocative entry in the independent festival circuit, cementing Kuri's reputation as a pioneer of avant-garde animation both domestically and in international galleries.
