Where it came from
Henkei Shoujo was released in 2017 by the animation studio DLE as a series of short-form ONA episodes. The project was conceived as a viral marketing campaign to demonstrate the capabilities of the studio while blending the common anime trope of high school girls with the mechanical absurdity of transformation sequences, where the protagonists shift into vehicles like fighter jets or tanks.
The character designs were handled by illustrator Keiichi Tanaka, known for his parodic and distinctively stylized aesthetic. The series was designed to be intentionally surreal and humorous, focusing on the jarring transition between slice-of-life school settings and heavy machinery. While the concept drew significant attention for its bizarre premise, it remains a niche curiosity within the studio's portfolio of experimental digital animation.
