Hi Gekiga Ukiyoe Senya Ichiya

Hi Gekiga Ukiyoe Senya Ichiya, released in 1969 as One Thousand and One Arabian Nights, holds a significant place in cinema history as the first feature-length animated film produced by Mushi Production specifically for an adult audience. Directed by Eiichi Yamamoto and famously overseen by Osamu Tezuka, the project was intended to push the boundaries of Japanese animation by integrating mature themes, eroticism, and a psychedelic aesthetic reflective of the counterculture era.

The film's visual style was heavily influenced by the gekiga movement, a genre of manga characterized by darker, more cinematic, and realistic storytelling. By blending these gritty narrative sensibilities with traditional ukiyo-e inspired art, the design team aimed to differentiate the work from standard family-friendly animation of the time. Upon its release, it was lauded for its bold experimentation and artistic ambition, setting a precedent for the development of adult-oriented anime in subsequent decades.
