Hige no Oisha-san

Hige no Oisha-san, or The Bearded Doctor, is a cherished segment originating from the long-running NHK educational variety program Okaasan to Issho. First introduced during the late 1970s and appearing through the 1980s, the segment was designed to demystify medical visits for young children. Through song and gentle puppetry, the titular character provided a friendly, non-threatening face for pediatric care, helping to alleviate the common anxieties toddlers often felt toward doctors and clinical environments.

The character design featured a distinct, soft-puppet aesthetic typical of NHK's high-quality educational programming of the era. The segment relied on simple, repetitive musical motifs and clear, empathetic storytelling to convey its message of health and safety. It was received as a staple of Japanese early childhood development, reflecting the network's commitment to creating comforting, socially responsible content that functioned as a surrogate for parental guidance in domestic television settings.
