Where it came from
Higepiyo originated as a four-panel gag manga by the artist Ito Riso, serialized in the seinen magazine Weekly Young Jump. The series centers on a peculiar, mustachioed chick—the titular Higepiyo—who possesses the demeanor of an elderly man despite his hatchling form, causing a variety of surreal and humorous domestic disruptions for the protagonist, Hiroshi.
The 2009 television anime adaptation was produced by Kinema Citrus and Aniplex, maintaining the absurd, low-stakes aesthetic of the source material. Directed by Atsushi Matsumoto, the series was designed to translate the brevity of the original manga into short-form animation segments, focusing on the character's juxtaposition of cute visual design and jarringly mature personality, which ultimately garnered a niche following for its deadpan humor.
