Hi Score Girl: Extra Stage

Hi Score Girl: Extra Stage was released in 2019 as a direct continuation of the anime adaptation of Rensuke Oshikiri’s manga series. Produced by J.C.Staff, these three OVA episodes serve as a supplemental epilogue to the main series, focusing on the character Koharu Hidaka and providing further closure to the central romantic arc. The production maintains the signature 3D cel-shaded animation style that characterizes the series, which was designed to authentically recreate the aesthetic of 1990s arcade culture and specific gaming hardware from that era.

The project emerged from the series' success in chronicling the evolution of Japanese gaming culture throughout the 1990s. The staff aimed to capture the nuance of the arcade scene while balancing the personal growth of the lead characters. Upon its release, the OVA was well-received by fans of the franchise for its dedication to historical accuracy regarding the games featured and for its sentimental approach to the concluding chapters of the original source material.
