The year is 1996, and second-year high school students Haruo Yaguchi, Akira Oono, and Koharu Hidaka live their lives as passionately about video games as they were five years ago. Brought together by arcade games, what began as a healthy rivalry and friendship has turned into something more. As they endeavour towards understanding their unfamiliar feelings, they work with allies, navigate high school, and find that, although life has its many challenges, there's always a game or two they can rely on.

Where it came from
Hi Score Girl II continues the narrative adaptation of Rensuke Oshikiri's manga series, which is celebrated for its authentic and nostalgic depiction of the 1990s Japanese arcade culture. Produced by J.C.Staff and released in 2019, this second season picks up directly from the original series, further exploring the evolving relationship between Haruo Yaguchi and Akira Oono through the lens of their shared passion for competitive gaming.
The production utilizes a distinct 3D computer-generated aesthetic to replicate the clunky, endearing character models of early console gaming, a stylistic choice intended to mirror the era the story inhabits. The series received significant critical attention for its meticulous recreation of retro game titles and hardware, which were cleared for inclusion through licensing agreements, grounding the fictional character drama in a verifiable historical context of the fighting game boom.
