Even though studying at a prestigious art school like Yamabuki is hard work, the girls who live at the Hidamari Apartments always manage to squeeze in time for a little fun and exploration. And when they actually get a day off? Watch out world! Yuno, Sae, Hiro, Miyako and new students Nori and Nazuna return to create another masterpiece of life as art, with all new adventures that include swimming, pajama parties, trips to the art museum and even an all-you-can-eat diner courtesy of the landlady! Of course, there’s always a little housework that has to be squeezed in, but with a pinch of resourcefulness and a dash of creativity, even the most onerous of chores can be turned into something magical.

Where it came from
Hidamari Sketch x SP was released in 2011 as a two-episode special bridging the gap between the third and fourth seasons of the Hidamari Sketch anime series. Produced by studio Shaft, these episodes were designed to maintain the series' signature aesthetic, characterized by experimental framing, vibrant color palettes, and the distinct artistic direction of Akiyuki Shinbo. The specials served to continue the gentle, slice-of-life narrative centered on Yuno and her friends at the Hidamari Apartments, staying faithful to the tone of Ume Aoki’s original manga.
The series is celebrated for its unique visual storytelling, which often utilizes unconventional backgrounds and abstract patterns to reflect the inner emotional states of its characters. Shaft’s adaptation is frequently cited by critics for its ability to balance mundane daily activities with a highly stylized, almost surreal artistic presentation. Upon its release, x SP was received warmly by the existing fan base, serving as a well-regarded continuation that upheld the series' reputation for high production values and whimsical character dynamics.
