Stories have been told of a legendary craftsman during the Edo-era, by the name of Jingoro Hidari. Today, sculptures accredited to Jingoro can be found throughout Japan, but his very existence is yet to be confirmed. Having lost his foster parent and right arm to the betrayal of his senior apprentices, Jingoro is on a journey of revenge with a mechanical prosthetic arm and his sidekick, “Sleeping Cat.” People soon came to call him Jingoro “Hidari” because of his ability to artfully use his carpentry tools with only his left arm (“hidari” means “left” in Japanese). Finally, Jingoro faces one of his adversaries “Inumaru” and the curtains rise on a fight to the death.

Where it came from
HIDARI is a stop-motion animated short film produced in 2023 by the Japanese studio dwarf, a company renowned for its craftsmanship in character animation and tactile design. The project serves as a pilot film, conceptualized by director Masahiro Okutani to demonstrate the potential for a larger narrative featuring the historical figure Hidari Jingoro, a legendary Edo-period woodcarver often shrouded in folklore. The pilot was intended to test a unique blend of traditional stop-motion techniques with dynamic, fluid action choreography rarely seen in the medium.
The film's aesthetic was heavily influenced by the intricate woodwork associated with Jingoro, emphasizing textures and a somber, cinematic color palette. By utilizing hand-crafted puppets and meticulously detailed sets, the design team aimed to evoke a sense of period-authentic grit combined with modern storytelling pacing. Upon its release, the film garnered significant attention within the animation community for its technical ambition, serving as a successful proof-of-concept for a full-length feature film project that remains in ongoing development.
