Where it came from
HIDARI is a short stop-motion animation film produced by the Japanese studio Whatever, directed and conceptualized by Masashi Kawamura. The project emerged from a desire to blend traditional Japanese wood-carving aesthetics with the tactile, deliberate medium of stop-motion, centering on the legendary sculptor Hidari Jingoro. The production process emphasized craftsmanship, utilizing actual wood-carved puppets that were articulated and animated to reflect the kinetic spirit of period-accurate action storytelling.
The film was designed to honor the historical craftsmanship of the Edo period, reimagining the lore of the master carver whose wooden creations were said to come to life. Upon its release, it was noted for its technical precision and the seamless integration of traditional materials into a modern animation workflow. It has been received as a unique stylistic achievement, praised for its visual texture and the innovative way it bridges the gap between historical folklore and contemporary independent animation.
