Where it came from
Hiyoko Gumo, or 'Cloud Chick,' originated from the beloved NHK educational program Okaasan to Issho. Created as a whimsical character to engage young children, the design draws on the traditional Japanese aesthetic of simple, rounded forms meant to convey warmth and accessibility. The character was developed by NHK’s production team as part of a broader initiative to incorporate gentle, surreal puppetry and animation into their long-running children's programming blocks.
The character design reflects the mid-century influence of Japanese character marketing, emphasizing a blend of softness and playfulness. It was intended to serve as a comforting visual companion during broadcast segments. Since its debut, the character has remained a recognized fixture within the NHK archives, maintaining its status as a piece of classic Japanese broadcast history due to the enduring popularity of the programs it inhabited.
