Where it came from
Hiyokoi originated as a popular shoujo manga series by Moe Yukimaru, which began serialization in Margaret magazine in 2009. The story follows Hiyori Nishiyama, an exceptionally shy and petite high school student, and her efforts to navigate life alongside her polar opposite, the tall and outgoing Yushin Hirose. Due to the series' resonance with readers regarding its gentle depiction of school-age romance and personal growth, it was selected for adaptation into an animated format.
This 2010 special was produced by Studio Production I.G as part of the 'Natsu Doki' event, which aimed to highlight rising manga properties through short-form animation. The production sought to capture the series' signature aesthetic—characterized by a pastel color palette and chibi-inspired character designs—to maintain the charm of the source material. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans of the manga for its faithful translation of the lead characters' contrasting dynamics and the lighthearted, earnest tone established in the original volumes.
