Hiyokoi (2012)

Hiyokoi originated as a popular shoujo manga series by Moe Yukimaru, serialized in Margaret magazine starting in 2009. The story centers on Hiyori Nishiyama, an exceptionally shy and petite girl who struggles to integrate into high school life after a prolonged recovery from an accident. The narrative was adapted into a short, two-part animated special by studio Production I.G, which aired as part of the Natsudorama festival on TV Tokyo in 2012.

The character design aims to visually represent the extreme contrast between Hiyori, who is often depicted as a small bird-like figure, and her polar opposite, the tall and outgoing Yuushin Hirose. This adaptation sought to translate the manga's gentle, slice-of-life tone into a brief visual medium, capturing the hallmark shoujo aesthetic of soft palettes and expressive, emotional character focus. While limited in duration, it was received as a faithful reflection of the source material's charm, emphasizing the emotional growth of its protagonists.
