Where it came from
Hiyoko no Basket: LAST GAME 0401 is an original net animation released in 2017 as a tie-in to the Kuroko no Basket franchise. It was produced as a lighthearted promotional supplement to the feature film Kuroko's Basketball: The Last Game, serving to bridge the gap between the serious tone of the movie and the series' history of chibi-style gag shorts. The animation centers on the characters depicted as 'hiyoko'—small, fuzzy chicks—a popular motif in the franchise's merchandise line.
The character designs were overseen by Production I.G, adapting the established chibi aesthetics that had become a staple of the show's Blu-ray and DVD special features. The short was intended to offer fans a brief, comedic respite during the theatrical run of the film. It was well-received by the existing fanbase, as it maintained the high production quality of the television series while embracing the whimsical, self-referential humor characteristic of the franchise's auxiliary content.
