Where it came from
Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere II was produced by the studio Sunrise and released in 2012 as a direct sequel to the 2011 anime adaptation of Minoru Kawakami’s light novel series. The production emerged from the ambitious goal of adapting an exceptionally dense and world-building-heavy narrative, which required Sunrise to manage a complex ensemble cast and a high-concept setting involving a floating city state and a reconstructed historical timeline.
The series design maintains the vibrant, intricate visual style established in the first season, characterized by elaborate mechanical designs and detailed costumes that reflect the show's blend of science fiction and fantasy. Directed by Manabu Ono, the production aimed to balance the rapid-fire dialogue and extensive exposition of the source material with dynamic action sequences, resulting in a polarizing but distinct aesthetic that continues to be recognized for its sheer density and technical complexity.
